I think it's only right to have an honest opinion. Is it really unhealthy being truthful? Sometimes larger churches think they can do as they like and disregard a more gracious people-centred approach. My experience is that Elim churches are often like this. They think they are more spiritual than other churches/christians and have it right. They are unforgiving, judgemental and write people off easily. The pastors are often more like bosses than shepherds who drive the sheep as they like to be seen as successful (usually measured by bums on seats and pounds in the offering). 'Promotion' to a larger church often depends on these issues rather than faithfulness. Success as opposed to fruitfulness is the criteria. Very sad when there are so many lonely, hurting and damaged people......not just outside the church but sadly in the Elim churches. If you are serving the purposes of the Leadership then you're 'in' and will get attention; if not, you're left out.

I thought your review was very fair and quite generous. It would be good for the leadership of that church to read as it contains some constructive criticism that they might want to take on board. It is also helpful for someone looking for a church to hear you thinking through the pros and cons. I think it is unhelpful when Christians don’t like criticisms or think that is in someway wrong even when delivered so charitably.

This is a very fair and generous review. I would agree with what you have said. When I went to a Pray & Go meeting I was impressed that they were praying for such topical issues with such enthusiasm. But my main distraction was what I can only describe as hyping up this enthusiasm. For instance, I found the way that one or two people shouted at the devil very difficult to stomach. Nevertheless, it was a good event.

I see now. An internship is a post as a work experience volunteer. Did you know that a number of years ago I did something similar for Mike but just one day a week? I did it for a few years, I think. I still listen to Mike on the radio and review the odd album or two. Reading your post brings back fond memories.

2008 Skate Conference to be held in Huntington Beach September 1st - 3rd

Pompano Beach, FL -- August 13, 2008 -- Christian Skaters announces that it will be hosting it's 2008 US Skate Conference in Huntington Beach, California this September 1st - 3rd. The event will be held at The Sanctuary Church located at 8642 Westminster Blvd. Westminster, CA 92683, 714-893-7437 Registration is available online at www.SkateConference.com

Join pro skaters, am skaters, youth pastors, skate companies and skate park owners as we equip, encourage, & pray for one another at this event that is one not to miss. Hear the stories on how skate ministry has impacted the lives of today's top skaters. Learn from those who are veterans at Skate Ministry. Even build a ramp!

This three day conference, is packed with information sure to inspire those who love skateboarding and want to make an impact on today's youth culture. Nightly events will feature an Art Show & Skate Event at a un-named local park.

Sports Illustrated said, "Skateboarding, second perhaps only to hip-hop, was the greatest influence on American youth culture of the late 20th centure. There is no sport as inextricably linked with America's alternative subculture." Skateboarding has become a huge part of the youth culture today. You walk through the mall and see the influence it has had on fashion. XGames is the largest viewed sporting event in the 13 to 24 age range. Twenty percent of young people in the US alone skateboard. That’s over 15 million. To top that off, over 38 million more have expressed a desire to learn an “extreme sport.”

Youth today are being bombarded by temptation. We see the statistics on youth involved in sexual activity, drugs, alcohol, and crime. These rates are alarming. In fact, youth ages 12-17 who are frequently bored are 50% more likely than those not often bored to smoke, drink, get drunk, and use illegal drugs. As recess is being cut from schools, our youth are replacing physical play with MTV and MySpace. As the youth culture turns more to media for stimulation, the need to focus on relationship-building is evident and crucial.

So, how do we reach these youth? Jesus met people right where they were at and continues to do that today. As pastors begin to see this cultural shift, this need to reach our youth with culturally relevant ministry becomes apparent. To meet this need, skate ministries have begun to pop up all over the world. Ministries like Skatechurch, Christian Skaters, Livin’ It, Boarders for Christ and Steelroots have stepped up to the plate to present the gospel in a way that reaches this culture.

Maybe you are a pastor or parent who constantly finds themselves chasing skaters off their property. Maybe you have a heart for "the hippies of the 21st century" and want to reach out like Jesus did. Maybe you were a skater yourself and your heart breaks for those in the next generation. Or, maybe you have found yourself planted right in the middle of skate ministry and feel like you just need some help.

With this in mind, Christian Skaters will host the 2nd Annual US Skate Ministry Conference September 1-3rd in Huntington Beach, CA. Over 100 people from different ministries were able to help equip, encourage and pray for one another. We were blessed by numerous speakers from different background and a amazing location in which to meet.

Audio from many of the 2007 speakers has been uploaded to You Tube. Download these amazing sessions from speakers like Christian Hosoi (Hosoi Skateboards/The Sanctuary), Steven Wolfe (Touch The World Ministries/Solid Foundation Skatepark), Mark Janetta (Splinter Skatepark), and more.
